SocialDNS is a novel naming and directory infrastructure for locating information in the World Wide Web. SocialDNS is NOT another alternative DNS root nor aims to replace the current DNS for locating information. It complements the existing DNS to offer advanced services that are beyond the scope of the existing infrastructure. More concretely, we provide client (IE and Firefox plugins) and server software capable of resolving name addresses under a new handler (go://). In this line, our architecture enables unlimited domains and top level domains (Web TLDs) and novel search mechanisms in the overall network using meta-information like tags and geolocation. Also note that in SocialDNS all the software is open source and all the information is public and free.(http://www.socialdns.net/domains/hosts.xml).

  • Why Social ?: Because we believe that names belong to users, so we are open sourcing the name assigment process under the go:// namespace. All conflicts and name assigment problems will be solved by users. Nevertheless, to avoid conflicts, we will maintain ownership for TLDs under ICANN.
  • Why DNS ? : Because we are offering a new Directory and Name System for the World Wide Web. Nevertheless, this name can be misleading: we DO NOT COMPETE with the existing DNS system. Our system is a Web Indirection Infrastructure that converts URLs (go://) to URLs and provide novel search services for Web resources. In any case we aim to replace the DNS system, on the contrary we benefit from the existing DNS system to resolve URLs.
