Name assignment policies
From Socialwiki
First of all, and to avoid conflicts with the existing DNS, the system includes mechanisms to avoid assignment of any of the existing ICANN TLDs (cTLDs, gTLDs). Only upon request of its current owner we would assign such TLD.
For the rest of possible domains, name assignment is completely free and open. Furthermore, it should be noticed that SocialDNS allows the use of International Domain Names. By using the IDNA (Internationalizing Domain Names in Applications) standard, we permit chinese, arabic, or whatever existing international characters in domain names. This opens up the possibilities for millions of domains by users, companies, institutions or geoTLDs among others.
Since name assignment is open and free, we are facing a possible gold rush for domains names by speculators and cibersquatters. To avoid these we have taken dissuasive measures against cibersquatting and content fakes. In this line, any user can take two actions against an already assigned name:
- Request Ownership: The MySQL company may claim the go://mysql TLD that has been previously assigned to other user. From this moment, this domain is in a conflict list, and a democratic voting system between users will decide on it. Users decide if the domain belongs to MySQL company instead of the cibersquatter. In that case, the requester will obtain the domain and the cibersquatter does not earn anything.
- Fake Request: when the users find offending or incorrect content associated to a domain name they can mark it as Fake. Again, the domain enters the conflict list, and a user voting mechanism will decide about maintaining or removing this domain name assignment.
We are delegating to users all the conflict resolution related to domain names. We expect that these measures will propitiate the emergence of the self-adjusting mechanisms that SocialDNS needs to grow without problems.
When a user creates a conflict on an existing domain, the current owner has the option of fixing the problem. If the user agrees, this will solve the conflict without the need of intermediation. We expect that many conflicts will be solved in this way. In other case, users will decide over this conflict.
General Rules
- Domain speculation is forbidden and useless. If you reserve domains like cocacola or nokia to earn money you are wasting your time. The conflict resolution process will remove your ownership over these domains.
- You can register domains that do not belong to you if they refer to the expected sites (cocacola, firefox, google, iphone). If the real owners ask for these domains you have the option of transfering the ownership to them. If not, conflict resolution will solve this dispute.
- The domain name must be related to the content of the referring web page. In the existing DNS system, many cibersquatters link domains to advertising sites without content. We want to avoid that.
- It is not recommended to reserve many domains refering to the same URL. We instead recommend to use a lot of tags to describe the content of your domain.
Finally, remember that the SocialDNS team is not responsible at all from the content linked in user domains.
